There is a lot of confusion over the FMCSA’s Hours of Service (HOS) rules. Ray Martinez Administrator for the FMCSA said the agency is crafting a rule, planned for proposal this year, to change federal hours of service regulations.
Martinez also announced FMCSA is finalizing an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) that will seek input from the industry on adopting Advanced Driver Safety (ADS) systems. The agency wants input for vehicle inspection protocols, human-system interaction and workforce issues, among other areas for new vehicle technology.
So, beyond keeping up on FleetWarrior for the latest information, what simple steps can you take to ensure your drivers are compliant with HOS rules.
- Partner with an ELD vendor that has compliance experts that understand all the nuances of the HOS rules.
- Select an ELD provider that delivers a user interface that is easy for drivers to understand and use. P&B Transport changed ELD providers and knocked their HOS violations down to nearly zero for the year.
- If you are on an ABORD or unhappy with your current ELD provider repeat steps 1 and 2 by taking the time to re-examine your current vendor and be sure to make sure your fleet makes the switch from AOBRDs to ELDs ahead of the deadline
